On this day...November 11th

On November 11,1890 Chicago inventor Daniel McCree invented a portable fire escape and received patent number 440,322.

Daniel McCree’s portable fire escape was designed for the interior of buildings, and could roll and had a carriage that could be raised and lowered. McCree improved on the fire-escape used in bigger buildings and created a portable wooden fire escape that could be attached to a home.It was intended to be part of a building’s own fire prevention equipment and was stored on location.

His invention is the basis for the models used today.
