21 February, 1924 Robert Gabriel Mogabe was born on 21 February 1924 in Kutama, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).He became Prime Minister of Zimbabwe in 1980 and in 1987 his title changed to President. It is 33 years that he has been in power. Mugabe was hailed a as a hero by both his countrymen and the international community for his part in the struggle for the independence of Zimbabwe.

However, in the mid 90’s Mugabe began making unpopular decisions that created unrest in his country. Including his decision to grant political asylum to the former Ethiopian President Mengistu Haile Mariam after he was found guilty of murdering millions of Ethiopians in was called the red terror. His refusal to amend the country’s one party constitution is also widely condemned. . Mugabe has been in a power sharing government with the opposition party leader MorganTsvangirai, of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) since 2009.
