28 February, 1932 Richard Spikes invented the automatic gear shift.

Richard Spikes, born in 1884 and transitioned in 1962 to the ancestral realm, was an African American engineer from San Francisco, California. He is best known for his automobile patents. He significantly enhanced the transmission of the motor vehicle with U.S. Patent 1,889,814. He would later invent brake related technologies for the automobile.
