On this day
27 March, 1995 Following weeks of speculations on the fate of Winnie Mandela in the government, president Nelson Mandela eventually expelled her from the position of deputy minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology.
The decision to expel her was unanimously hailed by parliamentary parties as well as the African National Congress (ANC) and its aligned structures, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) and ANC Youth League.
Though Mandela did not give reasons why he had expelled Winnie, he hinted that the former deputy minister should review her position and seek to improve her conduct in a position of responsibility.
