An African-American's invention was patented on 28 April 1891. George Toliver was awarded patent # 451,086 for a ship vessel's propeller. 

George Toliver was of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His redesigned propeller came during a time when sea vessels were the primary means of frieght. His invention was durable, simple, and efficient in providing ample power to force vessels through water and thereby gaining speed and economizing power.
