June 18, 1941 President Roosevelt conferred with A. Philip Randolph and other leaders of the March on Washington movement and urged them to call off a scheduled demonstration. Randolph refused.
A. Philip Randolph was a labor leader and social activist who fought for the rights of African-American laborers, including better wages and working conditions. He was a principal organizer of the 1963 March on Washington DC.
