On this day...
On October 30, 1831 Nathaniel "Nat" Turner was captured. ... Nat Turner was an African American slave who led a slave rebellion in Southampton County, Virginia on August 21, 1831. Known as the Turners Slave Rebellion, with a force consisted of more than 40 slaves, most on horseback Turner and his men in their struggle for liberation shot and clubbed at least 55 white people to death.
In retaliation over two hundred blacks were also killed after being beaten by white militias and mobs reacting with violence.[3] Across Virginia and other southern states, state legislators passed new laws prohibiting education of slaves and free blacks, restricting rights of assembly and other civil rights for free blacks, and requiring white ministers to be present at black worship services.
