Born on April 8, 1970, a native of Newark and son of radical novelist/activist/poet Amiri Baraka and Amina Baraka. The fiery black nationalist, Amiri Baraka operated under the name LeRoi Jones in the 1960's adn transitioned to the realm of the ancestors on January 9th 2014. Ras J. Baraka earned a BA in Political Science from Howard University in the United States Capitol, in which he was at the forefront of campus political and social activism. He gained his MA in Education Supervision fro St. Peter's University in Jersey City. He served as principal of Central High School from 2007 - 2013. Ras has made a name for himself from a community organizer to educational system to city councilman. He has risen to the occasion to lead the antagonism of the last official Mayor, Cory Booker. Ras's promise was to take Newark back from political bosses, Wall Street investors, and Governor Chris Christie, whose agendas, he said, had not served the city’s struggling people.
Ras Baraka was featured on a number of conscious poetry. Baraka independently released his debut spoken word CD entitled Shorty for Mayor in 1998. His single "Hot Beverage in Winter" featured Grammy award winning artist Lauryn Hill. Ras's relationship didn't start there with the Fugees crew, he was the narrator on Lauryn Hill's Grammy winning MisEducation of Lauryn Hill CD.
